Motion to Close Parts of Dripping Rock Road 

 At Tuesday's meeting, Upson County Commissioner Steve Hudson said he plans to make a motion  at the next regular meeting to close a portion of Dripping Rock Road. Officials of Camp Thunder Scout Camp made a request to close the road last year, becuase it's danger to scouts and families attending the camp. A public hearing would be required before it can be closed. Near-by homeowners have expressed some concern about the idea.

Veteran Employee Injured at Keadle Lumber Enterprises

 

 A veteran employee of Keadle Lumber Enterprises was life flighted to the Medical Center in Macon after he was injured Tuesday Morning. Keadle Vice President Tommy McInvale told TGA News, Josh Morgan of Thomaston, a key maintenance Tech for the company, sufferedbroken ribs and a punctured lung. He was attempting to repair a log kicker machine before 7:00 am when he was pinned by the arms of the machine. At last report Morgan was in stable condition in Macon. A log kicker moves logs toward the mill.

 Griffin Couple Arrested After Leaving Children Unattended

Spalding County Dee Stewart says a Griffin Couple has been arrested after the left their children at home alone, a one year old and a 3 year old, and went clubbing. 25 year old Mathew Autrey and his wife, Ashley 24, aleegedly locked their children in a bedroom and went to Locust Grove.

Upson County Coroner Hospitalized

Friends and relatives are requesting prayer for Upson County Coroner, Tim Cochran, who is in ICU at Macon Medical Center with a heart ailment. Cochran is also a Captain with the Thomaston Fire Department.

Guilty to Sexual Exploitation of a Child

 

In Upson Superior Court Thursday, a guilty plea was entered to a charge of Sexual Exploitation of a child. Judge Paschal English sentenced Arno Alnutt of Thomaston to 60-120 days in a detention center. The sentence also included 10 years probation, a $2500 fine, and defendant Alnutt must register as a sex offender. According to records, he downloaded images on his computer of minors exposing themselves, but there was no eveidence that he had tried to contact children.

Thomaston Community Blood Drive sponsored by the Sertoma Women of Upson, is Tuesday, March 9, 2010, from 2:30 P.M. - 7:30 P.M. at the Civic Center. 

 

 

 State University Budget Cuts Got the Governor's Dander Up

 

 Talk about big budget cuts in the University system have got the Governor's dander up. Governor Sonny Perdue said new funding cuts for state colleges won't happen on his watch. Among those proposed cuts in the UGA budget, eliminating the state 4-H program, but Senator Ronnie Chance and Representative Billy Maddox don't support it. Spaeking at the annual "Eggs and Issues" breakfast with Pike County Farm Bureau, Friday, Senator Chance said he was a 4-H'er growing up and he plans to protect thta program. Jon Huffmaster of Farm Bureau legilative department said he has not spoken to a single leadr of the General Assembly  who would vote for it. However, he did admit some budget cuts could happen.

Upson EMC receives half a million dollars

 

In ceremonies at the Thomaston Upson Government Complex, Monday, Shirley Sherrod, State Director of USDA Rural Development presented a ceremonial check for half a million dollars to Upson EMC President/CEO Neal Trice which funds a rail spur project at the new business park at the airport to create 45 new jobs at Innoware Plastics. The EMC will in turn provide a loan to the Thomaston Upson IDA, at zero interest for 10 years. The Chairman and CEO of Innoware, Nick Clementi said the company has committed $10 million in capital improvements for the manufacture of plastic take out containers for restaurants and deli’s.

 

Pike Protesters Planning another Protest

Anti-Tax Proponents in Pike County are planning another protest at 8:30 AM before Wednesday’s County Commissioners meeting at 9:00 AM. The Pike IDA is on the agenda to make a presentation on a natural gas pipeline proposed to serve the northern end of the county. It needs some county funding but the tax protesters say industry should foot the bill, not taxpayers.

 

Man Thrown from Tractor in Wreck

 A wreck on Highway 19 in Pike County involving a tractor and a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado seriously injured one man who was knocked from the tractor. The March 8, 2010 wreck slowed traffic until he was transported to the hospital, reports the Pike County Journal-Reporter.

 Thomaston Upson County School Board agenda tonight at 7 pm will address:

  • A request For Use Of Facility – Ms. Rhondalyn Traylor
  • Approval of Abstinence Based Curriculum (Mrs. Lynn Vickers will present proposed curriculum “Look Before You Leap”)

 

Georgians Need Summers

 

A Coweta County Mother has founded Georgians Need Summers aimed at starting schools no earlier than the third week of August. Lane Holt says it will save school systems millions of dollars when the state is cutting budgets plus it will provide longer summer vacations for kids.
