On Sunday, August 17, 2025, Griffin Police Department Uniform Patrol responded to a call at a storage facility located in the 700 block of Carver Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 5-year-old child suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Griffin Police and Spalding County Sheriff’s Deputies immediately began life-saving measures until personnel from Wellstar EMS and Griffin Fire arrived on scene. Despite their best efforts, the child tragically succumbed to his injuries.
During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the child was left unsupervised in the vehicle and was able to locate an unsecured firearm, which he discharged, tragically resulting in his death.
Chase Desselle (27) of Hampton GA was charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy for the family and our community,” said Chief Connie Sampson. Our sincere condolences are with them during this time of loss. The incident remains under investigation. No further details are being released at this time out of respect for the family.
