Harold William “Billy” Morton, Jr.

mlb19538

Mr. Harold William “Billy” Morton, Jr., age 82, of Locust Grove, passed away peacefully at his home on January 18, 2025.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold William Morton, Sr. and Isabel Moody Morton.

He is survived by his faithful wife of 63 years, Brinda Leatherwood Morton and the following:

three children and their spouses: Carol Ann Summers (Jeff), Pam Thornton (Brian) and Michael Morton (Kena); ten grandchildren: Zac Summers (Chelsea), Cob Summers, Katey Summers, Rachel McClean (Trey), Joshua Thornton (Jordan), Caleb Thornton (Jessica), Nikolas Thornton, Bella Morton, Reid Morton and Tyler Morton;  five great-grandchildren: William, Avery, Simon, Harvey, and Shepherd; three siblings and their spouses: Jerry Morton (Jane), Ellen Caldwell (Lester), Gary Morton (Jan), and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Billy was born at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, GA, where he would eventually work and retire after 35 years of service as Director of Environmental Services.  He is still held in high regard by those who worked with him over those years. During this time, he also worked as part-time Minister of Music at County Line Baptist in Covington, GA. His love for gospel music and the people he served still echoes today.

He enjoyed the outdoors and gathering with family and church friends at their Lake home in Jackson, GA. He loved Georgia Bulldog Football and hunting with cherished family members ….where he enjoyed the fellowship more than the hunting. In later years, he enjoyed feeding the deer and watching them out his window sitting in his favorite chair where they became friends instead of food.

During retirement, he spent much of his time in his workshop building wood projects and carving homemade walking sticks. He would then give away his walking sticks to those he met by encouraging them to be safe and then quote the scripture carved on the sticks. He loved meeting new people and loved driving to visit family and friends regularly.

Billy, along with Brinda, shared many years building a family who loved Jesus.  They moved to Locust Grove, GA to be closer to family and became active members of Hampton Baptist Church, in Hampton, GA. They would attend numerous grandchildren’s sporting events and were the ultimate supporters of all their endeavors. His love for his family was evident to all those around him and his faith in God was an ever-shining light to lead his family.

A celebration of Billy’s life will be held at 12N on Friday, January 24, 2025, at County Line Baptist Church, 3325 GA-162 Covington, GA.  Friends and extended family may visit the immediate family between 11am-12N in the church sanctuary prior to the service.  If you would like to bring a covered dish to share after the service, please bring it at 11am.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS: Please send a donation to the Georgia Baptist Children's Home and Ministries, where “Everyone needs a safe home to grow up” and/or Lottie Moon International Missions, where “Everyone needs to hear about the love of Jesus”.
