Hazel Hilton Nix

ree

Mrs. Hazel Hilton Nix, age 89, of Meansville, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family. Hazel grew up in Thomaston, daughter of the late Dee and Inez Hilton. She graduated from Yatesville High School and then attended Atlanta Technical College where she graduated at the top of her class and majored in computer programming. She worked as a programmer for Blackstone Foundry in Statesboro for several years.

After moving from town to town with Melvin’s job, he and Hazel, along with their three children, Dwain, Denise and Donna, settled down in Meansville when they purchased an old house and a few acres of land. Hazel was a homemaker and held several jobs. She worked in the payroll department at William Carter Company and American Mills and in the jewelry department at Walmart.

There was nothing Hazel couldn’t do.  She was an excellent seamstress who made everything from clothes for her children to drapes for her home. She also canned fruits and vegetables and loved to fish. She was very involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives as they enjoyed baseball and horse shows. When Denise and Donna joined the Brownies and Girl Scouts, Hazel became the leader and hosted events at her home. When Pike County started an ambulance service, Hazel took the six-month course and became a volunteer EMT. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and a big influence on her brother and sisters when they were young.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years: Douglas Melvin Nix, her son-in-law, Duane Armistead, sisters and a brother, Nellie Paulk, Maxine Jones and Julius Hilton.

She is survived by her children: Dwain Douglas Nix (Wendy), Denise Nix Armistead, Donna Carol Nix; grandchildren: LaKeitha Pierce (David), Jeremy Smith (Amanda), Dusty Dunbar, Stephanie Jones Obert (Jerred), Corey Dunbar (Holly) and Deanna Nix; great-grandchildren: Tyler Pierce, Tristan Barnett, Madison Barnett, Eli Dunbar, Ellie Dunbar, Alexis Smith, Cody Smith; sisters: Ezel Knowler, Marie Rogers, and Connie Potts (John); many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 3 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with Pastor Bud Gleaton officiating. Burial will follow in Fincher Memorial Cemetery in Meansville.

Friends may visit the family on Monday, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the funeral home.
