James Arlie Ayers

James Arlie Ayers, went home to be with Jesus, after a brief unexpected illness, on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the age of 88.

Born on November 23, 1937, in Bremen, GA., he was the son of the late John Monroe Ayers and the late Mattie Brice Ayers. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife and soulmate, Shirley Mae Ayers, whom he married on July 26, 1958. He was also preceded in death by his son, Daniel Drury “Dan” Ayers, and his siblings - Hobert Ayers, Jerry Ayers, Roy Ayers, Roland Ayers, Christine Shelnutt, Morine Rousey, and Edie Wilson.

Arlie and his wife were founding members of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Zebulon, GA. He worked as a welder at Ford Motor Company for 31 yrs. and 2 months before retiring.

Survivors include his sons: Jeff Ayers, Clay Ayers (Mary) and John Ayers; grandsons: Steven Ayers, Matthew Ayers, Jacob Ayers, and Gavyn Gill (Skye); many great-grandchildren and sisters-in-laws: Elaine Wright (Steve), Charlene Case and Regina Palmer; and a host of many nieces and nephews.

Following the passing of his cherished wife of 67 years, Shirley, he was blessed to find companionship again with Debra Whitehead. The family is deeply grateful for the love, laughter, and bright light she brought into his life during this past year.

Arlie had a village of very close friends that he loved and they loved him, and the family wanted to recognize their support for him throughout the years - Freddy Bostwick & Martha Little; Steve & Brenda Wiley; Keith & Chasity Polette, and Jaime & Jessica Strickland.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Ayers, Keith Polette, Steve Wiley, Darren Little, Matthew Ayers, Steven Ayers, Gavyn Gill, and Clay Ayers. Honorary pallbearer will be Jacob Ayers

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, from 11am -1pm, with the funeral at 1pm, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 5015 US 19, Zebulon. Rev. Bud Gleaton will officiate. Burial will follow in Moody Memorial Gardens in Zebulon.
