Michael Tyrone Mitchell

Mr. Michael Tyrone Mitchell, age 85, of Thomaston, passed away April 22, 2026. Michael grew up in Forsyth, son of the late James Mitchell and Muriel Neal.  Following his high school graduation, Michael enlisted in the United States Navy. While in the military, he traveled the world and furthered his education in criminal law and medical sciences. Michael served on the ground in the Vietnam War, worked in a naval hospital both before and after the war, and reenlisted in the Marines to become a Corpsman.

After retiring from the military, he continued to find ways to make a difference in the lives of others. He moved to Florida and worked in a boy’s camp/correctional facility, became a crime technician, spent a year building and working on boats in a marina with his son, Howard, and worked as a game warden in Alaska. A state he always enjoyed visiting.

His favorite place was near the ocean, but he returned to Georgia later in life to settle down and spend time with the grandchildren, who he dearly loved.

Michael could spin a story and tell a good joke.  He loved to cook, fish, and spend time with his family. He will be remembered for his bold personality, and as a great man with strong opinions who was always willing to help anyone in need.

Michael is preceded in death by his parents, James and Muriel; brothers, Jimmy Mitchell and “Red” Mitchell; son, Michael Andrew “Andy” Mitchell; and granddaughter, Cathy Mitchell.

He is survived by his son, Howard Mitchell (Mischelle); daughter, Tracy Maddox (Payton Alexander); five grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

A private memorial service will be held by his family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Wounded Warrior Project in memory of Michael.
