Remedios “Remie” Ibanez Scruggs, age 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on May 10, 2026. Her life was a beautiful example of kindness, strength, joy, and unconditional love for those around her.
Mrs. Scruggs was born on December 15, 1939, in Cebu, Philippines and moved to Georgia in 1974. She worked for many years in the Thomaston-Upson School cafeteria, where she became a beloved part of countless students’ and teachers’ daily lives. She wasn’t just serving meals — she was serving love, kindness, and encouragement every single day. With her warm smile, caring spirit, and loving heart, everyone who knew her affectionately called her “Granny.” She had a special way of making people feel welcomed, cared for, and loved.
After retirement, Mrs. Scruggs embraced life with an adventurous spirit and a joyful heart. She loved to travel and created treasured memories on frequent trips to Las Vegas, Biloxi, California, Disney Parks and cruises, and even a memorable trip to Japan at the age of 83. She proudly kept a valid passport at all times because she always looked forward to her next adventure and the opportunity to experience something new.
Mrs. Scruggs was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Marion Scruggs, and grandson, Stephen Chambers.
Left to cherish her memory and continue her legacy of love are her four children: Maricris (Michael) Farr of Kathleen, Ga.; May (Mark) Chambers of Thomaston, Ga.; Ronald (DeAnn) Scruggs of Thomaston, Ga; and Don (Wendy) Scruggs of Fayetteville, NC. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Brittney (Jeffrey) Champagne, Britton (Sydney) Ellington, Hunter (Crystal) Scruggs, and Jonathan (Amber) Scruggs; her precious great-grandchildren, Kamdyn and Avery; and lifelong friends, Nellie Baxter, Josie Skeens, and Cecilia Brown.
Mrs. Scruggs will be remembered for her loving heart, adventurous spirit, and the joy she brought to everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her memory will live on in the countless lives she touched and, in the family, she loved so deeply.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Upson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 14, 2026 from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.
