Richard Lee Ward

Mr. Richard Lee Ward, “Rick,” age 61, of Griffin, passed away June 20, 2026, at his home surrounded by the love of his family.

Rick grew up in Pike County and graduated from Pike County High School in 1983. He continued his education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

He had a love for all things aviation. His dad instilled the love of flight from a very early age. On his 16th birthday, he obtained his driver’s license and then with the help of his instructor Barbara Kitchens, he soloed in a Cub, Cessna 150, Cherokee 140, Piper Tomahawk, and a Cessna 172.

Rick was married to the love of his life Julie Ward for over 17 years. Rick and Julie spent their entire marriage flying in their own general aviation planes, with the Beech 18 being his favorite. They attended many airshows, traveled to fun, spontaneous destinations, and truly enjoyed the wonderful life they were blessed with. Rick was a devoted husband, son, father, grandfather, friend, and man of faith whose kindness, strength, and love touched countless lives. He spent his career doing what he loved most—flying. As a commercial airline pilot since 1998, Rick proudly flew the Boeing 717 and 737, carrying passengers safely across the skies while living out his lifelong passion for aviation. Ironically, Rick left this earth bound for heaven at 7:37 PM.

Those who knew Rick will remember his warm smile, generous heart, steady presence, and the joy he found in sharing his love of flight with others. Rick lived with purpose, integrity, and gratitude. Above all, Rick cherished his family. He is survived by the love of his life, Julie. He was the son of Iris Jeanine Ward and the late Richard Dwight “Dick” Ward. He was the brother of sisters Terri Patterson (John) and Tammy Deluzio (Greg). He was a dedicated and loving father to his children: Gavin Ward, Preston Ward, Lindsey McClosky (Todd), Taylor Yoder (Josh), and Mitchell Bargo (Kelly). His most cherished title was Pappy Rick. He is survived by his 9 grandchildren: Aubrey, Reese, Camryn, and Addison McClosky, Layton, Bryn, and Gannon Yoder, Maren and Brook Bargo. He is survived by his nephews Taylor Hardy, Daniel Deluzio, and Jake Patterson and his niece Allie Patterson. His love, guidance, and unwavering support will remain a lasting legacy in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

While our hearts are broken by his passing, we take comfort in knowing that this is not goodbye. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we know that Rick has been welcomed into his heavenly home and that we will see him again.

"Well done, good and faithful servant." — Matthew 25:23

Rick's memory will forever live on in the stories shared, the lives he touched, and every airplane that crosses the sky as we look to the heavens.

Friends may visit the family on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the Williamson Methodist Church, 20 2nd District Road, Williamson. Funeral services will be held following the viewing at 2 p.m. Pastor Billy Beard will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Williamson Methodist Church College Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 83, Williamson, GA, 30292, in memory of Rick.
