Unannounced State Inspection Affirms Quality Care at Spalding County Animal Care &Control
Spalding County, Ga. – Spalding County Animal Care & Control received positive results
following an unannounced inspection by the Georgia Department of Agriculture on
October 20, 2026.
The inspection evaluated shelter operations, cleanliness, sanitation, animal care, food and
water, humane care, record keeping, ventilation, temperature control and other
requirements. Spalding County Animal Care & Control passed every applicable
requirement evaluated.
The inspection followed a complaint concerning shelter conditions and the care of cats.
However, the state inspector specifically found the cat room and enclosures clean, fresh
food and water available, litter boxes clean, and the cats well cared for.
Those findings extended throughout the shelter. The inspector reported that all enclosures
and yards were clean, no waste was observed, the facility was clean throughout, and all
animals appeared well cared for.
“The importance of an unannounced inspection is that it reflects the work our employees
are doing every day,” said Spalding County Manager Steve Ledbetter. “These results affirm
the dedication of our Animal Care & Control team and the quality of care being provided to
the animals entrusted to us. Passing an inspection is important, but our goal remains
higher: continual improvement and excellence in animal care.”
Animal Care & Control Director A.J. Caldwell also welcomed the opportunity to strengthen
the department's working relationship with the Georgia Department of Agriculture as the
County continues pursuing high standards in shelter operations and animal care.
Spalding County remains committed to providing humane, responsible and
compassionate care while maintaining a clean, professional and accountable shelter for
the community.
Clean. Compassionate. Committed to Care
