Thomaston Police Department Investigating Shooting

THOMASTON, GA – Just after midnight on Thursday, June 11, 2026, officers with the Thomaston Police Department responded to a reported shooting in the parking lot located in front of Planet Fitness.

Preliminary investigation indicates that an ongoing dispute occurred between an individual riding a bicycle and several occupants of a white vehicle. During the encounter, multiple individuals exited the vehicle in the parking lot, at which time the individual on the bicycle allegedly discharged a firearm, firing several rounds and striking one person in the leg.

The victim has been identified as Caden Wellmaker of Thomaston. Following the incident, Mr. Wellmaker left the scene in the vehicle and transported himself to Upson Regional Medical Center for treatment. He is currently listed in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Personnel from the Thomaston Police Department working at the hospital checked the parking lot at which time they located and secured the vehicle involved as part of the ongoing investigation. Investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division were notified and responded to the scene.  Investigators processed the scene and began collecting evidence and conducting interviews related to the incident.  A suspect has been identified, and arrest warrants are being obtained. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.
