Thomaston, Georgia -June 12,2025 - The Upson County Building and Zoning Department has a slightly different accent this summer. Pearl Seyram Asamoah, a Master of Community Planning candidate from Auburn University, is currently serving her mid-program internship with Upson County.
Pearl hails from Ho, a city in the Volta Region of Ghana, located on the west coast of Africa. Ghana, a country just under twice the size of Alabama is home to over 34 million people, making it more populous than Georgia and Alabama combined. She is the daughter of Francis Korku Asamoah and Rose Enyonam Asamoah, and she brings with her a passion for community development, land use planning, and zoning.
Before beginning her studies at Auburn University in 2024, Pearl had never set foot in the United States. But in just over a year, she has already explored several Southern states, including Florida, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, and of course, Georgia which she now calls a second home.

Pearl holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Settlement Planning from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana. At Auburn, she quickly distinguished herself both academically and professionally. She was awarded a prestigious scholarship from the American Planning Association and was recently named the Outstanding Master’s Student in Community Planning for 2025. She is also the current Vice President of the Student Planning Association in her department.
“I have only been with Upson County for just three weeks now and I am already learning a lot from my supervisor, Doug Currier II. So far in my internship, I have gone on inspections with the code enforcement team, attended court sessions and planning commission meetings, working on a project at Lincoln Park, providing customer service, and learning planning-related skills from my supervisor. I believe these experiences will help me build my skills and prepare me for my future career,” said Pearl Seyram Asamoah.
